To each their own

(/To each their own/)
Everyone has a right to have different preferences or make different choices.

"I personally wouldn't have chosen such a flashy car, but to each his own."

A: "It's a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I really love watching cheesy horror movies."

B: "Hey, to each their own. I'm not going to judge you for that."

Certainly, this is one of the rules that we should follow when discussing someone else's taste in music. There are various factors and reasons why we enjoy the music that we enjoy but what are they and are they valid?

Popularity
Some people ponder that popular music (not the genre) is good music. Personally, this is not valid but also not wrong. There are different reasons why a song/artist became popular: successful promotion strategies, being influential in some way, being featured in a movie/commercial or being shared with the listeners' family/friends (or even strangers). Not every song or artist that gained popularity in such way is considered being "good". This is because there are many musicians that are successful at their work but their career has, for example, promotional gaps which lead to smaller renown and therefore, the idea of popularity being a valid reason for the music always being favorable is improper.

Whatever
In this world with various people with various interests, we may encounter a type of person that doesn't care about music at all. They do not value anything about it: the emotions, the meaning, nothing. This is quite unacceptable today by most of the society but actually.. this is quite understandable. This is comparable to disregarding sport. There are people who are very passionate about it and enjoy everything about the idea of it but there are people who hate it and do not see anything pleasurable in this interest. And that's why distinctiveness present in every single creature is a good trait - life would be boring if we would all be the same. Of course we should respect that there are people who exceedingly adore certain interests but also we should respect the ones that don't.

Age
Assuredly, we can experience a kind of a human being that only enjoys music released from a certain time period. This happens because of the idea that modern music is effortless, less enjoyable, repetitive and lacks exceptionality. We can clearly see on the website Album of the Year - a website that aggregates reviews of music releases - on the list of best albums of the 1990s from the user ratings that there are 13 albums that received an average score above or 90 out of 100 from more than 400 ratings, while on the other side, on the list of best albums of the 2010s there are only 3 albums that are rated above or 90 out of 100 of which two belong to Kendrick Lamar and one to Kanye West. On the other hand, some people could consider old music unfavorable and one of the reasons why they hold that perspective is because of the fact that technology was less advanced back then thus, mixing and mastering was worse executed when compared to 2010s music. In their eyes, those two processes are necessary to provide an enjoyable experience while listening to music as this controls the "quality" of the music to some extent.

Field
This type of person only listens to one genre or one family of genres. They do not tolerate any other types of music as they find them unbearable. There are numerous reasons why that happens, one of which is the familiarity and being brought up with this kind of music. Humans' minds enjoy receptivity as well as familiar sounds, some could consider them even nostalgic. When this closed field of acquaintance with a fence is crossed, the person feels unsafe, unsure, repulsed and probably to some extent disgusted. When this person gets used to hearing the techniques, motifs and such musical behavior, they get to enjoy this kind of music even more and gradually, the fence surrounding the field is gradually unmounted. This is the way that I opened myself into enjoying different kinds of electronic music as well as experimental and psychedelic that to some people struggle to feel delighted with. If you feel like you're this kind of music listener, you should try to get used to and understand other genres because this is only a pleasurable experience that will make your knowledge about music even broader.

Opinions
There is a group of people that greatly care about others' opinions. An example of people that this type of listeners opinions cares about could be members of family. They care about every sentence that the family member mentions about the artist/song/album and usually over-analyzes the words spoken. This kind of behavior at times leads to disgust with the artist/song/album just because of the opinion. The same reaction could apply to various music-related aggregating websites that add users' ratings of certain release together and the total is averaged, setting an image of what is a bad and a good album, when comparing a release to other ones. On the other hand, it is a good idea because it helps with approximately identifying what the audience enjoys more and what less as the score is a summary of what some part of the audience thinks of the release because not every single person who listened to the release has actually rated the album on any of those websites and ultimately, it shouldn't always be followed because of course, to each their own.

Denouement
Every single person is different and as a wise human kind, we should tolerate, respect and even try to understand the differences and why people enjoy the differences, rather than reject every single idea about a certain belief or preference.
